Dr. Bhagawan Koirala is a Professor & Chief Cardiac Surgeon at Manmohan Cardiothoracic, Vascular & Transplant Center. He introduced open heart surgery in Nepal and led the establishment of Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center (SGNHC) in Kathmandu. Dr. Koirala did fellowship in cardiac surgery at Baystate Medical Center in Massachusetts and later at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. He was appointed as the Executive Director of Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center in 2001 where he served till 2009. He not only established the all range of cardiac care at SGNHC but also he developed a cost subsidy program for the treatment of the poor, children, and elderly. By starting the “Poor Patients Relief" program in 2003, he provided free cardiac care for children, elderly and needy with the support of the Government of Nepal. From 2001 to 2012, he has performed over 10,000 heart operations by himself or under his supervision. He has been awarded with multiple honors including Manager of the Year 2007 by Management Association of Nepal, Suprawal Janasewa Shree III and Sukirtimaya Rastradeep III by the President of Nepal, “Good Governance Award-2020” by GoGo Foundation and many others. Till now, he has published more than 40 original research papers in national and international journals and has been a member of many international societies. Being one of the senior-most surgeons and capable administrators, he was appointed the Director of T.U. Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in November 2012. He has also served as Executive Vice-Chair of Health Profession Education Commission, formed by the government of Nepal. In 2019, Koirala was appointed chairperson of the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), the sole government entity that tests the competence of MBBS graduates and specialists before getting the license to practice.
